(OMAHA, NE – Monday, July 11) Following what was perceived to be a great start beating the New England Liberty 26-6, the Omaha Heart have been outscored 143 – 0 in its last two games vs. Atlanta and Chicago, respectively. Today came the announcement that many expected, head coach Tony Doremus and his staff have been released, effective immediately.
After 3 seasons with Dontae Allen as head coach, Allen was released after the embarrassment that was the 2015 season. Enter Tony Doremus who was suppose to bring in a more structured regime with accountable assistant coaches and results on the field. The results were more of the same, the franchise has continued to fall well below football standards for the LFL.
While coaching staffs are not normally released until teams have played their final game of the season or ‘Black Monday’, the Omaha situation grew far worse when not a single assistant coach traveled to the recent Chicago Bliss game. When head coach Tony Doremus could not return to the game after halftime due to a medical precaution, the Heart were left without a coach on the sideline.
It is believed that was the breaking-point and where ownership decided the dedication of the coaching staff was not up to the standards of the LFL nor what the Heart athletes deserve. “Its certainly disappointing to the amazing fans who have supported this franchise since 2012, despite a lackluster football product. This season has reached a new-low and a decision had to be made in the best interest of our athletes, fans and organization”, said Mitchell Mortaza, Managing Partner, Legends Football League, LLC.
The Heart will be the league’s first-ever player-coached team in history when they host their home finale on Saturday, July 30th vs Dallas Desire at Ralston Arena.
What will make the July 30th game more interesting is a scenario where if Omaha can beat Dallas and Atlanta drops its final two games, the Heart would be the No.2 seed in the Eastern Conference Championship.
