Hey y’all. If you can’t tell I’ve been spending a lot of time in Texas as the LFL wound it’s way through the Lone Star State on consecutive weekends. I’ve already returned from Dallas, but we’ll get to that in the next installment of ‘On The Road.’ This week we’re focusing square on the live music capital of the world: Austin, TX. Now there may be other cities that have that claim (the good people of Nashville are probably the first to chirp up) but there’s an advertisement in the Austin airport that makes that claim so it must be true.
For those who don’t remember, I attended the University of Kansas. Apart from the fact that KU and Texas are both in the Big 12 there’s a reason I bring that up. Both states tend to be VERY conservative both politically and in their culture. However, two of their college towns are their lone liberal beacons. I once read this line in a U.S. News university guide, “Lawrence, KS is a blue island in a red sea.” I don’t know why I love that line so much, maybe because it makes me think of Charlton Heston as Moses parting the Red Sea in ‘The Ten Commandments.’
Anyways, here’s the point I’m getting at: the saying “keep Austin weird” is still holding steadfast. Austin, like Lawrence, is a blue dot in the red Texas landscape. It’s of course one of the fastest growing cities in America and that’s going to bring change, but I have a feeling the people of Austin are going to do everything they can to hold onto the cities roots. That’s the Texas gumption that Texans are so proud of.
What about my experience during the weekend? The LFL team made sure to get its barbecue fix satisfied during the trip but we ran into some issues. Mobile devices were pulled out, different apps and services were used, and a BBQ joint was selected. However, when we got there the place was closed for an oddly specific reason. The sign said, “closed, sold out of product.” They ran out of the meat! I guess that’s a sign that the place is legit but it’s still a weird concept to me. Perhaps fans of the blog can get back to me and let me know if this is a normal thing in Texas (or elsewhere).
The game was a competitive one and by the end of the night the Los Angeles Temptation had kept their playoff hopes alive while the Austin Acoustic closed out a tough (but competitive) 1-3 season.
I can’t wait to let you into our Dallas weekend, but I’ll save that for next time.
